[Singer/ Performer/Icon] Madonna

I LOVE this photo shoot. So iconic. Every single shot should be on a t-shirt or something. So dope. Madonna still got it, y’all!

Here she is in the May 2010 issue of Interview Mag looking absolutely fabulous. LOVE this!

[Designer] Alexander McQueen (RIP) Fall 2010 Accessories Collection

I have to admit, there’s alot to learn about fashion that I have yet to know.

However I do know what I like and I do know what is talent…and Alexander McQueen had it all. Sadly, he is no longer with us but left a genius Fall 2010 collection.  Take a look at his accessories collection for Fall 2010. It is so superb, so classic but original…so phenomenally intricate and nuanced. Fabulous.

You will be missed, Mr. McQueen.

Debbie Harry is probably one of the most iconic figures of  the new wave/ punk rock scene of the mid-1970′s.  She was a gorgeous woman with a huge talent….I adore her.

Check out the photos after the quote.

“I feel like I have to have a voice. “

In the aftermath of her brother’s death, Janet has kept quite silent. In the October 2009 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, she gives an exclusive interview on Michael and her break up with Jermaine Dupri. Look at these gorgeous photos from the interview…classic, glamorous and elegant.  I love the look.

[Artist] Alfons Mucha 1860-1939

I was actually just put on to famed Art Nouveau painter, Mucha, by my friend Erika Dickstein. I had always seen reproductions and such but never quite knew the name of the artist or seen the extensive work he completed. Amazingly feminine and ethereal, very neo-classical reminiscent… the best part of the female forms Mucha depicted in his art? They were all thick voluptuous women! Peep the work below!

Quotes from Michael Jackson (RIP)

Posted by @Imani_Sublime | A quote from...,One of the Greats | Friday 26 June 2009 10:18 am

In remembrance of the King of Pop… a true genius… a master of his craft before he hit his teens… without his music, pop artists of today would not exist. There would be no Neyo, no Usher, no Chris Brown,  no Justin Timberlake, nor would there be the flamboyance and style of Kanye West. His tumultuous personal life in his later years aside; musically, Michael should be respected and honored for all of his contributions.

May he rest in peace and may the Lord watch and protect over his grieving family.

He was loved by many, across the world and all the hate could never outshine the love we held for him. Below are some of the beautiful words he should be remembered for.

Let us dream of tomorrow where we can truly love from the soul, and know love as the ultimate truth at the heart of all creation.

The original “Foxy Brown”, this pin-up queen is synonomous with the “blaxploitation” film genre and no matter what generation, Pam Grier is a beauty to be reckoned with.  I adore her for being so blunt and ready and for being the gangsta princess she is and always will be. ONE OF THE GREATS!!!!

[Tocarra] Plus-Size Model

Posted by @Imani_Sublime | Friggin Fierce Women,Look And Likes [Fashion, Photography, Models, Art, etc],One of the Greats | Thursday 19 March 2009 12:47 pm
Okay, so I just want to acknowledge that women of color are beautiful and thick and sexy.
I remember the episode of “America’s Next Top Model” when skinny plastic Janice Dickinson tells Tocarra…”You need to lose some weight,” and how proud I was of Tocarra’s confidence and swagger, despite being criticized constantly for being the plus-size model of the cast. Though I am not a fan of KING magazine, they say her cover was one of the fastest selling issues (besides Mya’s cover). And in the hood (and to my brothers…LOL) that is pretty friggin’ hot!
Here, shown in the photos she took for the All-Black Issue of Vogue Italia…she is sinous, sexy as shit…and yes y’all… thick as a mug..LOL! Ladies, let us celebrate our curves instead of conforming to European concepts of beauty. I love Tocarra for representing us thick and beautiful women of color in the best possible light….fiercely! YOU GO MAMA!!!!!!!

RIP Ralph Mercado (1941-2009)

Posted by @Imani_Sublime | One of the Greats | Wednesday 11 March 2009 9:38 am

On March 10, 2009, Salsa promoter Ralph Mercado passed away after a battle with cancer. Born in 1941 in Brooklyn, this Boricua-Dominican was a renowned name that brought Latin acts such as Marc Anthony, La India, Tony Vega, Tito Nieves and the like to the forefront. His promotional skills and talent for discovering and nurturing budding acts brought him 30 years of success in the music industry, accentuated by his personal and professional relationships with radio personalities, press outlets, and others of the Latin music industry.

Honored with a Lifetime Acheivement tribute by Billboard magazine in 1999, Mercado is noted as the first promoter to bring salsa music to Africa, South America, the Orient and Israel. His dynamic concert presentations “Ralph Mercado Presents..” and Latin music concerts at such prestigious venues as Radio City Music Hall; Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall; the Beacon Theater; and Madison Square Garden are to be remembered in his illustrious career. In 1976 Mayor Beam presented Mercado with a proclamation establishing the September concerts, currently in its 31st year, as the “Official New York Salsa Day” and in 2005, Mercado was honored with yet another proclamation from the Mayor of the City of New York.

I still have ticket stubs from a concert my mother and I attended years ago… faded and loved… it is one of the best memories of my adolescence. I can clearly recall watching people dance to the music in the aisles of Madison Square Garden. Latinos took over the Garden that night and the clave of our hearts beat in unison. And this is all in thanks to Mr. Ralph Mercado and his vision.

Deepest condolences to his family at this time, who hopefully are comforted by the profusion of love from his fans. You will be missed, Mr. Mercado.

RIP BiG (1972-1997)

“While we out here, say the hustlas prayer
If the game shakes me or breaks me
I hope it makes me a better man
Take a better stand
Put money in my moms hand
Get my daughter this college plan, so she don’t need no man
Stay far from timid
Only make moves when ya heart’s in it
And live the phrase Sky’s The Limit…”

RIP Agustin Caraballoso (1928-2009)

Posted by @Imani_Sublime | One of the Greats | Monday 2 March 2009 3:42 pm

On the morning of February 23, 2009, Agustin Caraballoso, famed mambo trumpeter, passed away due to a heart attack.

Agustin was a member of Arsenio Rodriguez’s orchestra in Cuba and in New York City during the era when Mambo was created. In Cuba, he worked with Machito, Celia Cruz, and Mario Bauzo. In New York City, he continued his musical career, working with Johnny Pacheco, Tito Puente, Marcelino Guerra, Mongo Santamaria, and Israel “Cachao” Lopez. He is featured on Aresnio Rodriguez’s last two albums, including “Arsenio Dice”, in which he worked with Palladium Era legends such as Chocolate Armenteros, Rene Hernandez, and “Alfonso el Panameno”.

These are only some of the highlights of Mr. Caraballaoso’s illustrious career. He was an extraordinary man and a legend in his own right.

May his legacy live on and his memory remain strong in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.

RIP Joe Cuba (1931-February 15,2009)

Posted by @Imani_Sublime | One of the Greats | Tuesday 17 February 2009 3:25 pm

Salsa band
leader
Joe Cuba, dubbed the “Father of Latin Boogaloo”, died Sunday, February 15, 2009 in NYC at the age of 78.
Cuba was a key architect of Boogaloo, a bilingual sound that fused Afro-Carribean genres with the urban R&B stylings of NYC…thus being a key component of what is now called The Nuyorican Movement. He was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in April of 1999, and was the director of the Museum of La Salsa, in El Barrio, NYC (Spanish Harlem).
May he rest in peace and be reassured that his legacy will remain.
